This weeks randomly generated theme is:

The mother in laws house is the location, hatred is the theme. A hat is an object that plays a part in the story.

Ok, so here goes:

“She is doing this to annoy me!”

My soon to be husband shakes his head vehemently, “Of course she isn’t, she loves you.”

“Are you joking? I’ll always be the one that is stealing her precious little boy from her.”

He looks around anxiously, “Could you keep your voice down, she might hear you.”

“Good.” I say a little louder than necessary. I can see he is panicking so I lower my voice, “Are you honestly telling me you are fine with her wearing that.”

“What’s wrong with it?”

“Are you joking? The guests behind her won’t be able to see the altar, let alone us. It looks like a goose nested on her head.”

He sniggers, “Now you’re just being mean. She spent a lot of money on it.”

“Well geese are expensive, and at least five died to create that monstrosity.”

“Could you just come back downstairs? It’s not as bad as you think it is.”

I surrender, “Fine, I’ll give it one last chance.”

He leads me back downstairs where the family is gathered. My future Mother is in the center, just where she likes to be on these occasions. She is still wearing the hat, parading it around like a float. It is even worse than I thought. She locks eyes with me and her stare is frosty. She speaks loudly at me, “It is beautiful isn’t it.”

It’s a challenge not a question. I can’t drag my eyes away from it, it’s like an overturned truck that was carrying pillows. I mumble an objection and look to my fiancee for backup. He just smirks nervously. The coward.
